A former Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party in Ondo State, Kennedy Peretei, has emerged as the pioneer chairman of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in the state.

Peretei was elected on Monday during the party’s inaugural congress held in Akure, where delegates drawn from the 18 LGAs endorsed a new executive through consensus.

The exercise, which took place at Royal Birds Hotel and Towers in Alagbaka, had about 150 delegates in attendance, signalling the formal take-off of the party’s structure in the state.

Chairman of the Congress Committee, Emmanuel Alli, who announced the result, said the process complied with directives from the party’s national leadership and reflected the collective decision of members.

In his acceptance speech, Peretei described Nigeria as being at a critical political moment, adding that the party was already witnessing rapid growth nationwide ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He claimed that no fewer than 10 million Nigerians registered with the party within 48 hours, insisting the figure was verifiable and indicative of public dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs.

The new chairman also revealed that there are attempts to weaken opposition voices, warning that efforts to restrict the political space would fail, while assuring that the party would provide strong opposition and hold those in power accountable.
