Tenant dies as rent dispute turns violent in Ibadan

A rent dispute in the Oriyangi area of Ibadan, Oyo State, has turned tragic, leaving a tenant identified as Olayeni dead.

The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement posted on its official X handle on Sunday, noting that the confrontation occurred on Wednesday, September 3, 2025.

According to the police, the landlord had invited a friend to mediate during a disagreement with the tenant. However, the intervention escalated into violence, and the landlord’s friend allegedly struck Olayeni, causing him to collapse.

“Emergency responders arrived promptly, but unfortunately, he was pronounced dead at the hospital,” the command stated.

Police authorities disclosed that both the landlord and his associate have been arrested and are under investigation.

The command extended its condolences to the bereaved family and assured the public that justice would be served.
