Security operatives were deployed to the Ojoo area of Ibadan, Oyo State, on Wednesday after a violent disturbance broke out following the alleged killing of a tricycle mechanic.
The incident, which reportedly occurred overnight, created panic among residents and disrupted normal activities as tensions escalated in parts of the community.
According to eyewitness accounts, the victim, identified as a Yoruba tricycle mechanic, was allegedly stabbed to death during an altercation involving suspected Hausa scrap collectors. However, the circumstances surrounding the incident have not been officially confirmed by security agencies.
The alleged killing sparked outrage among some residents, leading to clashes involving youths and raising fears of possible reprisal attacks. Several residents reportedly fled the area in search of safety as the unrest intensified.
Witnesses said many businesses were forced to close while motorists and commuters avoided the area amid concerns over the deteriorating security situation.
In response, security personnel, including operatives of Operation Burst and other security agencies, were deployed to strategic locations across Ojoo to restore order and prevent the violence from spreading to neighbouring communities.
The heavy security presence gradually brought the situation under control, while residents were urged to remain calm and refrain from actions capable of escalating tensions.
As of press time, neither the Oyo State Government nor the Oyo State Police Command had issued an official statement confirming the incident or announcing any arrests. Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations into the alleged killing and the subsequent disturbance continue.
