The dancing governor and convicted Oba, by Chris Adetayo
I frankly don’t understand what the Governor of Osun State, Senator Ademola Adeleke, is doing. That is, apart from turning every event to a dancing platform.
On 21 April 2025, Oba Olugbenga Oloyede of Ipetumodu pleaded guilty to several counts of fraud charges in the US.
4 months later, precisely on 26 August 2025, the said Oba was sentenced to 56 months in jail. That is, almost 5 years. When he’s done with that, he will be under “supervised release” for another 3 years. In addition, he is to refund or forfeit $4.4m.
It’s October and the Government of Osun State has not taken any action on this disgraceful episode. No suspension, no removal, nothing tangible.
We have been told that the Government is waiting for “Certified True Copy” of the judgement. Another was the Governor asking his Local Government Commissioner to take action – with no specifics on the action to take.
I’m deeply embarrassed by this state of affairs. How can my State Governor not know what to do immediately? Even the mere fact that a Traditional Ruler is away from his domain for so long – when it’s not a medical leave – is enough reason to take action. It’s enough to suspend. To have a situation where he pled guilty almost 6 months ago and nothing has happened? He’s done 2 months in jail already and nothing has happened? Haba!
If the Governor is not ashamed, the citizens of Osun should be. It shows us to lack morals and lack courage. Where is the famed “Omoluabi” in this fiasco? Where are the Elder Statesmen of Osun State? What are they doing about this??
