Tinubu accepts Egbetokun’s resignation, appoints Tunji Disu acting IGP

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, and appointed Assistant Inspector-General of Police Tunji Disu as Acting IGP with immediate effect.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga, the President approved Egbetokun’s resignation following the submission of a letter in which he cited pressing family considerations.
Tinubu expressed appreciation for Egbetokun’s decades of service to the Nigeria Police Force and the country, commending his dedication and efforts to strengthen the nation’s internal security architecture during his tenure.
Egbetokun was appointed Inspector-General of Police in June 2023 for a four-year term expected to end in June 2027, in line with the amended provisions of the Police Act.
Following his resignation, the President approved the appointment of Tunji Disu, an Assistant Inspector-General of Police, to take over in an acting capacity. The appointment takes immediate effect.
According to the statement, the decision was taken in view of the prevailing security challenges across the country and in accordance with relevant legal provisions.
Tinubu expressed confidence in Disu’s experience, operational expertise and leadership ability to steer the Nigeria Police Force at a critical time.
The President is expected to convene a meeting of the Nigeria Police Council in line with the Police Act 2020 to formally consider Disu’s appointment as substantive Inspector-General of Police. His name will subsequently be forwarded to the Senate for confirmation.
