Tinubu applauds NGX for crossing N100trn market capitalisation, urges Nigerians to invest locally

By Kunle Sanni –
President Bola Tinubu has commended stakeholders in Nigeria’s capital market following the Nigerian Exchange’s (NGX) crossing of the N100 trillion market capitalisation mark, describing the milestone as a sign of renewed investor confidence and economic rejuvenation.
In a statement by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, on Thursday, the president praised corporate Nigeria, investors, and citizens for their roles in achieving the historic feat, which he said reflects the positive impact of ongoing economic reforms.
Tinubu urged Nigerians to deepen their investments in the local economy, assuring that 2026 would deliver even stronger returns as government reforms gain momentum.
He noted that while many global markets struggled with slow growth in 2025, Nigeria’s stock market recorded strong performance, with the NGX All-Share Index closing the year with a return of 51.19 per cent, up from 37.65 per cent in 2024. According to him, the performance ranks among the strongest globally, outperforming major indices such as the S&P 500, FTSE 100, and several emerging-market peers.
The president asserted that the stock market’s performance is a key indicator of the country’s economic health and growing investor confidence, adding that Nigeria is emerging as an attractive investment destination rather than a frontier market to be overlooked.
He highlighted strong performances across sectors on the NGX, including industrial companies that have localised supply chains and a banking sector driven by resilience and technological innovation.
Tinubu also pointed to a robust pipeline of new listings, noting that indigenous energy firms, technology companies, telecommunications operators, and infrastructure-focused entities are seeking to access the capital market to fund expansion. He added that these listings would further boost market capitalisation and broaden ownership of the economy.
