Voters, not political heavyweights, determine PDP’s success – Ondo State chairman

By Boye Oyeyemi –

The Ondo State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Modupe Aisida, has said the party’s electoral strength is rooted in the voters and not in political heavyweights.

Aisida stated this during an interview, insisting that the PDP remains united despite the recent defections of some prominent members to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

He explained that recent election outcomes had shown that the electorate, not influential individuals, ultimately determines who wins elections, urging parties to build strong institutions rather than rely on strongmen.

According to him, the exit of some party leaders has not weakened the PDP, stressing that many of those who left rose to prominence through the party and that the PDP has since moved on.

Aisida argued that the wave of defections was largely driven by personal interests, adding that voters must be enlightened to understand that power belongs to them, not to politicians.

He also dismissed suggestions of factionalisation within the PDP, saying the party was only experiencing differences of opinion, which he described as normal in a democratic setting.

On the 2027 presidential race, Aisida said the PDP would allow a level playing field for all aspirants, noting that the party had already zoned the presidency to the South.
