Tinubu appoints ex-military intelligence chief as homeland security adviser

President Bola Tinubu has appointed retired Major General Adeyinka Fadewa as Special Adviser on Homeland Security, in a move aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s internal security coordination and intelligence operations.

The appointment was conveyed on Monday via a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, and issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana.

According to the statement, the appointment “underscores the commitment of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthening internal security coordination, enhancing intelligence-driven operations, and deepening inter-agency collaboration in addressing emerging security threats across the country.”

Major General Fadewa, a retired senior military officer with more than three decades of service, is recognised for his experience in national security strategy, counter-terrorism operations, intelligence coordination, and international security diplomacy.

Between 2015 and 2021, he served as Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA), where he led the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre (IFC).

The Presidency said the centre created “an integrated multi-agency intelligence platform” bringing together the Defence Intelligence Agency, National Intelligence Agency, Department of State Services, the Nigeria Police Force and the Armed Forces “to improve national threat assessment and strategic response coordination.”

Following his retirement from active military service, Fadewa served as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre in Abuja, contributing to research and policy discussions on policing, national security reform and civil-security cooperation.

The statement also highlighted his scholarly work, including the monograph, “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” described as offering “practical frameworks for strengthening civil-security collaboration.”
