President Bola Tinubu has approved the appointment of three indigenes of Oyo State to the Governing Council of the Surveyors Council of Nigeria, with Surveyor Moshood Akinwande named president of the council.
The appointments are part of the Federal Government’s efforts to strengthen the leadership of SURCON, the statutory body responsible for regulating surveying practice and maintaining professional standards across the country.
Surveyor Akinwande, a fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, hails from Oyo Town. He retired as a Director in the Office of the Surveyor-General of the Federation after a distinguished career in the public service and will now lead the newly constituted governing council.
Also appointed are Surveyor Olusoji Adeoye, a Fellow of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors and the Surveyor-General of Oyo State, and Surveyor Olaribigbe Shiyanbola, a former chairman of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, Oyo State Chapter, and former secretary of the Board of Fellows of the institution.
Shiyanbola, who is from Ipapo in Itesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, is widely recognised for his contributions to the surveying profession and his commitment to advancing professional development within the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors.
According to the appointment letter signed by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar, on behalf of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, the new governing council will be inaugurated on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, at the SGF Hall, Shehu Shagari Complex, Three Arms Zone, Abuja.
The Surveyors Council of Nigeria is the statutory regulatory body responsible for the registration and regulation of surveyors in the country. It also oversees professional ethics, sets standards for surveying practice and promotes the growth of the profession through a governing council comprising representatives of professional bodies, state governments, academic institutions and the military.
The appointments of Akinwande, Adeoye and Shiyanbola are expected to strengthen Oyo State’s representation at the national level while contributing to improved surveying practice, land administration and geospatial development. The new council is also expected to promote professionalism, uphold ethical standards and support government initiatives on mapping, infrastructure planning and sustainable land management across Nigeria.
