President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦16.7 billion for the immediate reconstruction of the Mokwa Bridge in Niger State, which collapsed in May following severe flooding.
The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, announced the approval on Saturday after a meeting with the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, during a Federal Government project inspection tour in the South-East.
Idris described the funding as a demonstration of the Tinubu administration’s responsiveness to urgent infrastructure needs. “We jointly discussed this and approached Mr. President, who graciously approved it. It means a lot to the people. It’s ₦16.7 billion to reconstruct the bridge — a 10-span bridge,” he said.
He also praised Umahi for his swift intervention after the disaster, including sending technical experts to assess the extent of the damage. “This is music to the ears of the government and people of Niger State,” Idris added.
Senator Umahi said the President’s action reflects his commitment to solving pressing infrastructure challenges nationwide. “The President approved the immediate reconstruction of the bridge as requested by the Honourable Minister. He graciously approved because of him,” Umahi noted.
The Works Minister revealed that the Federal Government has also approved the repair and reconstruction of several key infrastructure projects across all regions of the country.
Among these projects are the restoration of a washed-away five-span bridge in Wukari, Taraba State, and improvements to the Lokoja Bridge. Additionally, permanent repairs will be carried out on the Afikpo–Abia–Imo section.
Umahi further mentioned that the Keffi Flyover Bridge and the Jebba Bridge in Kwara State will receive attention, along with seven bridges in Edo State and another bridge in Kebbi State.
