Tinubu converts Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa into specialised mining university

President Bola Tinubu has approved the upgrade of the Federal Polytechnic, Nasarawa, to the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology, as part of efforts to strengthen technical education and develop Nigeria’s solid minerals sector.
The President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday, saying the approval reflects the administration’s commitment to expanding specialised tertiary education and aligning it with the country’s economic priorities.
According to the statement, the decision followed a proposal by Senator Ahmed Wadada Aliyu, who represents Nasarawa West Senatorial District, urging the establishment of a specialised institution to leverage Nasarawa State’s rich solid mineral deposits and support Nigeria’s industrialisation drive.
The Presidency said the new university would focus on delivering “world-class education, research, and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy, manufacturing, and emerging technologies,” while producing the skilled manpower needed to drive value addition, technological advancement, and the sustainable exploitation of the nation’s mineral resources.
It added that the conversion is part of President Tinubu’s broader plan to align Nigeria’s tertiary education system with national development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda by establishing specialised institutions tailored to key sectors of the economy.
The President also directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission (NUC), and other relevant agencies to begin the processes required to implement the conversion in line with existing laws and regulations.
Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to investing in education, describing it as a strategic tool for promoting economic growth, innovation, job creation, and national prosperity.
