Tinubu explains why he appointed Bosun Tijani despite past criticism

President Bola Tinubu has revealed that his decision to appoint Dr. Bosun Tijani as Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy—despite his past criticism—was driven by a commitment to recognizing talent over personal grievances.

Speaking at a special Iftar held in his honor at the Presidential Villa to mark his 73rd birthday, Tinubu stated that he saw potential in Tijani, even though some of his closest associates opposed the appointment.

“When I picked him, it was tough. My very close confidants, who had read his comments on social media, came to me and said, ‘No, never.’ But I said, ‘Yes, he is talented. Because he criticizes me and the parliament, it does not mean he has nothing to offer,’” Tinubu said.

He added that past frustrations might have fueled Tijani’s criticisms but believed they could also drive him to contribute meaningfully to governance. “And today, he is doing that, and I am very proud of him,” the President added.

Tijani, who was present at the event alongside several dignitaries, including Vice President Kashim Shettima and Senate President Godswill Akpabio, reflected on his appointment. He recalled his surprise at Tinubu’s decision and the President’s willingness to look beyond past disagreements.

“Before my appointment, I had never met Mr. President. But after my confirmation, he told me, ‘I have looked at your records and activism, and I have seen there is something in you. I am giving you the opportunity to represent your country and contribute to making it a better place,’” Tijani recounted.

Senate President Akpabio also highlighted the controversy surrounding Tijani’s nomination, noting that some senators initially opposed his confirmation due to his past remarks about the National Assembly.

“When he came to the Senate for screening, some senators objected. One even read a post where he described all Nigerian senators as ‘morons.’ I asked him, ‘Did you write this?’ He admitted, ‘Sir, I did, because that was how I felt then.’ And I said, ‘And you have the audacity to stand before us and expect us to confirm you?’”
