President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Pa Reuben Famuyide Fasoranti, as the revered Yoruba nationalist and educationist marks his 99th birthday.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu described Pa Fasoranti as a “dependable, graceful, and exemplary leader” who has lived a life of unblemished public service and unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
“Baba has enjoyed extraordinary grace from God in attaining this age,” the President said. “Even when he appears frail due to old age, his mind remains active and sharp.”
Tinubu praised Fasoranti’s accomplishments as an educator and politician, highlighting his role in founding Omolere Nursery School and Akure High School—institutions he described as enduring symbols of his legacy.
He also reflected on Fasoranti’s political journey, from his early involvement with Chief Obafemi Awolowo’s Action Group to his service as Finance Commissioner under Chief Michael Adekunle Ajasin’s administration in Ondo State. Tinubu credited Fasoranti with sound fiscal management that supported the successful implementation of the Unity Party of Nigeria’s cardinal programmes.
The President further lauded Fasoranti’s bravery during Nigeria’s military rule, especially during the regime of the late General Sani Abacha, when he and other Afenifere and NADECO leaders resisted authoritarianism.
Tinubu also recalled the elder statesman’s support for his 2023 presidential bid. “When I decided to run for the presidency three years ago, I visited Baba Fasoranti at his residence in Akure. I remain deeply grateful for his blessings and belief in my vision for our country,” he said.
He expressed joy that Pa Fasoranti is alive to witness the current administration’s efforts to revamp the economy and guide the nation toward sustainable growth.
