Tinubu meets security chiefs amid rising insecurity in Northern Nigeria

President Bola Tinubu is currently holding a high-level security meeting with Nigeria’s service chiefs and the Inspector General of Police at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
The meeting comes amid a surge in violent attacks across several northern states, including Plateau, Benue, and Borno, where hundreds have reportedly been killed in recent weeks. The deteriorating security situation has raised fresh concerns about the government’s capacity to contain unrest and protect vulnerable communities.
The closed-door session includes Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa; Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede; Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Emmanuel Ogalla; and Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, among other top security officials.
This development follows President Tinubu’s recent directive to immediately establish and deploy forest guard units across 1,129 designated forests nationwide, in a bid to counter the activities of terrorists and bandits who exploit Nigeria’s vast, ungoverned spaces.
While official details of the meeting have yet to be released, sources suggest the agenda is centered on responding to the spike in insecurity and reviewing strategies for more coordinated and effective action.
The meeting precedes the President’s scheduled trip to Rome on Saturday, where he is expected to attend the inauguration Mass of Pope Leo XIV, following a formal invitation from the Vatican.
