Tinubu mourns former UBA chairman Chief Israel Ogbue, dies at 99

President Bola Tinubu has expressed his condolences over the death of former United Bank for Africa (UBA) Chairman, Chief Israel Ogbue, who passed away at the age of 99.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President commiserated with the late banker’s family, friends and associates, describing his death as a significant loss.

Chief Ogbue had a distinguished career spanning the Federal Civil Service, the National Insurance Corporation (NICON), and NAL Merchant Bank before joining the board of United Bank for Africa as a non-executive director in 2005. He was appointed Chairman in 2011 and served on the board until 2013, a period the President noted was marked by dignity, strategic foresight and principled leadership during a transformative phase for the bank.

The late Ogbue was the father of Dr Awele Elumelu, wife of Tony Elumelu, Group Chairman of UBA.

President Tinubu extended his condolences to the Elumelu family and other relatives, as well as to the board, management and staff of UBA. He acknowledged tributes describing the former chairman as a devoted family man, committed public servant and faithful Christian who dedicated his life to serving his community, the church, and the vulnerable.

The President prayed for the repose of the departed patriarch’s soul and for comfort for his family.
