By Kunle Sanni –
President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to Chief Oludolapo Ibukun Akinkugbe, a pioneering pharmacist, entrepreneur, and philanthropist, who died on September 22 at the age of 96.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President described the late Akinkugbe as “a man of uncommon vision and industry” whose contributions to healthcare, education, entrepreneurship, and philanthropy left an enduring mark on Nigeria.
“Nigeria has lost a giant, but his life’s work will continue to speak for him across generations,” Tinubu said.
The President hailed Akinkugbe as part of a remarkable generation of Nigerians whose intellect and innovation shaped the foundation of modern Nigeria. He highlighted his pioneering role as one of the country’s earliest pharmacists, his establishment of Palm Chemists, and his co-founding of Spectrum Books, which expanded access to quality education across Nigeria and Africa.
“Akinkugbe lived with grace, served with humility, and generously gave his wisdom and resources to advance society. His impact on the development of the socio-economic landscape of Nigeria will forever remain indelible,” the President said.
Tinubu extended condolences on behalf of the government and people of Nigeria to the Akinkugbe family, as well as to the pharmaceutical, education, and publishing sectors, which he said greatly benefited from the late pharmacist’s legacy.
Chief Akinkugbe was also noted for breaking colonial barriers in corporate boardrooms, using his expertise to help establish thriving indigenous businesses.
President Tinubu prayed for the peaceful repose of his soul.
