Tinubu orders review of waterway safety after Sokoto boat accident

President Bola Tinubu has directed federal authorities to review and strengthen safety measures on the nation’s waterways following a boat accident in Gorau community, Goronyo Local Government Area of Sokoto State, that reportedly killed several people and left others missing.
Tinubu ordered the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) and the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to work with the Sokoto State Government to improve safety standards and prevent a recurrence.
The President issued the directive while expressing condolences to the families of victims and describing the incident as a tragedy.
According to a statement issued on Friday by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu also directed relevant agencies to ensure strict enforcement of safety regulations governing inland water transportation.
“The news of this boat mishap deeply saddens me. My thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families during this difficult time,” Tinubu said.
He prayed for the repose of the victims and strength for their families to bear the loss.
Tinubu also commended emergency responders and local authorities involved in rescue and recovery operations, while directing the agencies to work closely with the Sokoto authorities on preventive measures.
He further prayed for the speedy recovery of those injured and assured the people of Sokoto State of the Federal Government’s support.
