By Kunle Sanni –
President Bola Tinubu has paid tribute to elder statesman, Owelle Gilbert Chikelu, on the occasion of his 95th birthday, describing him as a symbol of integrity and excellence in public service.
In a message personally signed and released on Saturday, President Tinubu praised Chikelu for his decades of contributions to Nigeria’s progress in both the public and private sectors, noting that his life has been defined by selfless service, peacebuilding, and national development.
“You epitomised the true essence of public service in promoting peace, stability, and development. Many of the initiatives introduced during your stewardship continue to shape and inspire improved service delivery to this day,” the President said.
Recounting Chikelu’s distinguished career as a “Super Permanent Secretary,” Tinubu highlighted his roles across various ministries, including Mines and Power, Economic Development and National Planning, Employment and Labour, and Petroleum Resources.
The President further described the launch of Chikelu’s biography, Owelle: The GPO Chikelu Story, written by historian Nze Ed Keazor and unveiled in London on Saturday, as timely and significant.
He said the book offers invaluable lessons on “integrity, accountability, and patriotism” at a time when Nigeria is grappling with enormous challenges, adding that Chikelu’s story should remain a guide for political leaders and aspiring public servants.
“Your 95-year journey has been filled with profound testimonies, impact on humanity, and selfless service to our beloved country. I celebrate you with great admiration, trusting that your story will continue to inspire generations,” Tinubu said.
Owelle Chikelu, who holds the national honour of Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), is also the Owelle of Ichida, the Owelle of Anaocha, and a Knight of St. Paul in the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion).
