President Bola Tinubu has summoned an emergency session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) to honour the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Saturday, July 13, 2025, in London following a prolonged illness.

The special FEC meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, July 15, and will be entirely dedicated to celebrating the life and legacy of the late leader.

In a heartfelt tribute personally signed by President Tinubu and released by the Presidency, he described Buhari as “a patriot, a soldier, a statesman” whose unwavering dedication to Nigeria defined his service in both military and civilian roles.

“It is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that I received the news of the passing of His Excellency, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (Rtd), GCFR, my predecessor,” Tinubu wrote. “He stood firm through the most turbulent times, leading with quiet strength, profound integrity, and an unshakable belief in Nigeria’s potential.”

President Tinubu noted that Buhari’s legacy of discipline, anti-corruption efforts, and national unity would continue to shape Nigeria’s democratic journey. He also emphasized the former leader’s lifelong commitment to placing national interest above personal ambition.

In honour of Buhari’s contributions, Tinubu ordered all national flags to be flown at half-staff for seven days. He also assured Nigerians that the Federal Government will accord Buhari full state honours “befitting his towering contributions to our country.”

The President expressed his condolences to the late president’s widow, Aisha Buhari, his children, the entire Buhari family, and the people of Katsina State—especially the Daura Emirate.

“May Allah forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus,” Tinubu prayed, adding that Buhari’s life would continue to inspire future generations to serve Nigeria with courage, conviction, and selflessness.
