President Bola Tinubu will on Wednesday depart Abuja for Johannesburg, South Africa, to participate in the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit, before proceeding to Luanda, Angola, for the 7th African Union–European Union (AU–EU) meeting.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu is travelling on the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, who currently chairs the G20.
The Nigerian leader was also invited to last year’s edition in Brazil by then G20 President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
The G20 Summit, scheduled for 22–23 November at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, will bring together leaders of the world’s major economies, alongside the African Union, the European Union, and global financial institutions. This year’s theme, “Solidarity, Equality, Sustainability,” will guide discussions on inclusive economic growth, global trade, development financing, debt burdens, climate change, disaster risk reduction, the energy transition, food systems, and artificial intelligence.
President Tinubu is expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the margins of the summit, focusing on economic cooperation, regional stability, and advancing Nigeria’s development priorities under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
After the G20 meeting, Tinubu will travel to Luanda for the AU–EU Summit taking place from 24 to 25 November. The gathering will bring together African and European heads of state, civil society groups, youth leaders, and innovators to address shared challenges, including climate change, infrastructure financing, inclusive development, the digital economy, creative industries, manufacturing, and agribusiness.
The president will be accompanied by senior government officials, including the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar; Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun; Minister of Solid Minerals, Dele Alake; Minister of Trade and Investment, Jumoke Oduwole; and Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Mohammed Mohammed.
President Tinubu is expected to return to Nigeria at the end of the two meetings.
