Tinubu urges African leaders to prioritize unity for development

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has called on African leaders to prioritize peace and unity as essential foundations for the continent’s progress and development. He emphasized that without stability, achieving meaningful progress in Africa would remain a challenge.
Speaking at a dinner hosted in his honor by President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo of Equatorial Guinea, Tinubu emphasized the importance of African nations taking charge of their own problems rather than relying on external forces, which often expect conflict and instability on the continent.
“Peace, stability, and democracy are the keys to Africa’s progress,” Tinubu stated, urging his counterparts to act decisively. “The time is now for us to take action.”
Earlier, President Tinubu and President Obiang held discussions and signed agreements in various sectors, including petroleum and security, as part of efforts to strengthen bilateral relations.
Tinubu also addressed the ongoing brain drain and talent loss in Africa, attributing it to factors such as poverty, outdated judicial systems, and tribalism. He called for urgent reforms to address these issues and foster development across the continent.
In addition, President Tinubu appealed to international organizations to increase their investments in African research and development to help unlock the continent’s potential.
“We must work together to make peace the foundation of our development. Without peace, there can be no progress,” he said. “Our problem is not a lack of understanding of what needs to be done; it is about how and when to do it. And I say the time is now.”
“We need to roll up our sleeves, put on our work gear, and move forward for peace, stability, and progress. Why are we complaining about healthcare problems if our doctors have no home on this continent, if our nurses face destitution, if our judicial systems are archaic, and if tribalism remains a barrier?”
“Tribalism has no place in Africa. We must take control of our continent, unite, support one another, and develop our resources for our progress. We need to find solutions within ourselves, focus on research and development, and ensure the results benefit us. Don’t sell them out.”
“To international organizations, we say thank you for being our partners. We will continue to collaborate, but we urge you to invest more in research and development within the continent. We have millions of youths yearning for progress.”
The President also highlighted the need for collective action to address conflicts in regions such as the Congo Republic and the Sahel.
“Our gathering here today marks a significant milestone in the history of Africa, particularly between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Equatorial Guinea. I am pleased to hear the deep insights from my brother, the President of Equatorial Guinea, on Africa.”
“It is Africa that must solve its own problems. Others may wish for a continent plagued by conflict, but we say no. Peace, stability, and democracy are the way forward for progressive development, and we are united in this resolve.”
“We will continue to promote peace and stability throughout the continent. Our brothers, still in conflict, must be brought to the table. We must do everything possible to promote peace among them. What we see in regions like the Congo Republic and other areas of the Sahel is disheartening and jeopardizes our future.”
Earlier, President Mbasogo praised the excellent ties between Equatorial Guinea and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, expressing his gratitude for accepting the invitation to visit.
Referring to sectors such as education, mining, hydrocarbons, trade, defense, agriculture, and investment, President Mbasogo expressed his continued delight with the expanding collaboration between Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria.
He acknowledged Nigeria’s vast expertise in commerce, tourism, agriculture, and economic development, and stated his hope for a mutually advantageous experience-sharing program between the two nations.
In stressing the importance of African unity, the leader of Equatorial Guinea also called for increased regional and global collaboration to tackle issues such as maritime crime, security threats, and economic diversification.
President Mbasogo emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law, defending constitutional institutions, and advocating for greater African representation in international fora, especially the UN Security Council. He expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his insightful visit and his belief that the newly strengthened collaboration between their countries would benefit their respective peoples.
