Veteran actress and filmmaker, Toyin Abraham’s Oversabi Aunty, has hit the ₦1 billion mark at the box office, becoming the first directorial debut to achieve the feat and the fourth highest-grossing Nollywood film of all time.
The announcement was made by the movie distributor, FilmOne, on Instagram, revealing that the film earned ₦1,017,201,953 in cinemas across West Africa. In the celebratory post, FilmOne thanked audiences across the region for their support, describing the achievement as a historic moment for the industry and commending the film’s commercial success.
Oversabi Aunty was released on December 19, 2025. It is a comedy directed by Toyin Abraham, who also produced the film. The story revolves around Toun, a self-righteous and overzealous church usher obsessed with “fixing” the lives of those around her, particularly family members and fellow congregants, leading to several conflicts.
The movie stars notable actors, including Mike Ezuruonye and Odunlade Adekola, among others. It explores themes such as hypocrisy, parental rivalry, tribalism in marriage and family neglect, delivered with sarcasm and humour.
The film’s box office performance steadily grew from its cinema debut until it crossed the ₦1 billion mark. This was bolstered by the producer’s marketing efforts, including consistent social media engagement and grassroots promotions at cinemas to drive publicity and audience turnout. The film continues to screen in cinemas across Nigeria and the United Kingdom.
Her previous projects include Alakada: Bad and Boujee (2024), which grossed ₦500.3 million; Malaika (2023), which grossed over ₦300 million; Ijakumo: The Born Again Stripper (2022), which grossed over ₦278 million; and The Ghost and the Tout Too (2021), which grossed over ₦134 million. Her latest achievement, Oversabi Aunty, has sparked widespread celebration on social media.
Reacting to the milestone, Toyin expressed appreciation to her fans, cast and production crew for their roles in the project’s success. “Thank you, everyone. I’m short of words. Oversabi Aunty to the world and still showing in cinemas near you. My first directorial debut on the big screen. Thank you, thank you, thank you,” she wrote.
Prior to the ₦1 billion success of the movie, Toyin had earlier made a faith-based declaration, stating, “If this movie doesn’t hit ₦1 billion or surpass it, then it means I am not a Christian, it means I am not serving God.” Following the milestone, she attributed the success to God, describing herself as a “Jesus baby.”
