Traditionalists honour Makinde with new name at Isese Day celebration

Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, has been renamed “Orisaseyi Omimakinde” by traditional worshippers in recognition of his support for Yoruba culture and religion.
The honour was bestowed during the 2025 Isese Day celebration held at Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, where thousands of devotees, dressed in white attire and traditional regalia, gathered to mark the annual event.
Isese Day, also known as Traditional Worshippers’ Day, is observed every August 20 to celebrate Yoruba cultural heritage, honour the deities (Orishas), and offer prayers for peace, prosperity, and unity.
This year’s edition in Oyo State was particularly significant as traditionalists publicly expressed their gratitude to Governor Makinde for his commitment to preserving indigenous practices and fostering religious harmony.
In a symbolic gesture, the worshippers jointly christened him “Orisaseyi Omimakinde,” meaning “the traditionalists’ oracle of prosperity.” They also offered prayers and libations to the Orishas, seeking blessings for the governor and the state.
According to the leaders of the group, the new title reflects Governor Makinde’s advocacy for cultural diversity, as well as his continuous support for the recognition of traditional religion in Oyo State.
