A family of four—comprising a father, three children, and their maid—lost their lives in a fatal road accident involving a truck and a Toyota Hilux along the Ife-Ilesa Expressway in Osun State on Saturday.
The wife, who was also in the vehicle, sustained critical injuries and was rushed to a private hospital in Ipetumodu for urgent medical attention.
The accident, which was confirmed by the Public Enlightenment Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osun Sector Command, Agnes Ogungbemi, on behalf of the Sector Commander, Corps Commander Taofeek Sokunbi, occurred around 10:15 a.m.
According to Ogungbemi, the crash occurred when a Mark trailer with no registration number veered onto the wrong lane and collided head-on with the family’s vehicle, a white Toyota Hilux with registration number FKJ 691 HZ.
The trailer driver was arrested and handed over to the Nigeria Police Force at the Edun-Abon Division, while the wreckage of the vehicles involved was also taken into police custody.
Ogungbemi noted that the crash was caused by excessive speeding and a one-way traffic violation by the trailer driver.
Recovered from the scene, according to the FRSC Sector Commander, Taofeek Sokunbi, were personal items including a small bag containing jewelry, bags of clothes, and cash totaling ₦508,900, which were handed over to the victims’ relatives in the presence of police officers.
Sokunbi, who added that the only surviving woman was the wife of the deceased man, cautioned motorists against reckless driving and warned against route violations.
