Tremor: Oyo Govt tells Igbeti residents to vacate Iyamopo Hill

The Oyo State Government has allayed the fears of residents of Igbeti in Olorunsogo Local Government Area following a slight earth tremor over the weekend.

However, it urged residents living near Iyamopo Hill to temporarily evacuate until a permanent solution is reached.

The Oyo State Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated on Tuesday that experts from the State Solid Mineral Development Agency (OYSMIDA), led by Director-General Mr. Biodun Oni, had been dispatched to the site.

The commissioner explained that the disruption resulted from physical weathering caused by intense heat from February to May, followed by sudden cooling. This expansion and contraction led to cracking, peeling, and sheeting of the rock, causing minor tremors and rock movements as witnessed over the weekend.

He added that the government is collaborating with experts from the University of Ibadan to analyze the geological activity and devise measures to prevent future occurrences.

Oyelade said the state is considering strategies to safeguard lives and property in the affected area.

He assured residents there was no cause for alarm and emphasized that no casualties had been recorded.

According to him, the government remains committed to public safety and will provide updates as investigations progress.
