Troops repel terrorist attack in Borno, kill over 80 insurgents

Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation HADIN KAI, have foiled a coordinated terrorist attack on their positions in Mallam Fatori, Borno State, killing more than 80 insurgents, including key commanders.

The military said the attack, which occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, involved a five-pronged assault by terrorists who advanced on foot and deployed armed drones in an attempt to breach the defences of troops at the 68 Battalion location.

According to a statement by the Media Information Officer of Operation HADIN KAI, Lt.-Col. Sani Uba, the troops had prior intelligence about the planned assault and prepared accordingly.

He said the attackers were met with strong resistance and were forced to retreat in disarray after intense fighting.

Air support from the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI, alongside allied Nigerien air assets, was deployed during the operation, delivering precision strikes on fleeing insurgents.

Troops also recovered a large cache of arms and ammunition, including rifles, machine guns, rocket-propelled grenade tubes, improvised explosive devices and communication equipment.

The military disclosed that three high-profile terrorist commanders were among those killed, alongside several other fighters, dealing a significant blow to the group’s operations.

It added that four soldiers were wounded in action, while reassuring residents that the security situation in Mallam Fatori and surrounding areas remains under control.
