Turaki-led PDP announces alliance with APM ahead of 2027 elections

A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party led by Kabiru Turaki has announced a political alliance with the Allied Peoples Movement as preparations intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The spokesperson of the Turaki-led PDP faction, Ini Ememobong, confirmed the development in an interview on Wednesday, saying the partnership emerged from discussions held during the All Opposition Political Party Leaders Summit in Ibadan, Oyo State, in April.

“Many more alliances to come, but starting with this,” Ememobong said, according to TheCable.

The announcement comes weeks after opposition parties, including the Turaki-led PDP faction, the African Democratic Congress and a faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, unveiled plans to present a joint presidential candidate for the 2027 elections.

Political realignments have continued to gather momentum within the opposition bloc following the recent defection of Bala Mohammed from the PDP. On May 7, the Bauchi governor obtained the APM senatorial nomination form, five days after leaving the opposition party.

There is also growing speculation that Seyi Makinde, a prominent PDP figure and governor of Oyo State, may formally join the APM during a planned joint mega rally by both parties scheduled to hold in Ibadan on Thursday.

Ahead of the rally, several PDP lawmakers representing Oyo State at both the state and federal levels reportedly defected to the APM.

The PDP has remained divided into rival factions in recent months. The faction supported by Nyesom Wike and led by Abdulrahman Mohammed is currently recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission as the party’s official leadership.
