The United States Mission in Nigeria has extended condolences to the Nigerian people following the death of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing him as a leader whose life was marked by service, discipline, and a commitment to restoring integrity to public office.

In a post shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Sunday, the U.S. Mission commended Buhari’s contributions to Nigeria’s democratic development and his efforts to strengthen national institutions.

“The U.S. Mission in Nigeria extends our deepest condolences to the people of Nigeria on the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari,” the statement read. “His legacy includes his efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s democratic institutions.”

The Mission added that its thoughts are with Buhari’s family, loved ones, and all Nigerians mourning the loss of the former president.

President Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, in London after a prolonged illness. The Nigerian government has announced plans to accord him full state honours, with his remains expected to be flown back to the country in the coming days.
