Uber shuts down operations in Nigeria, Uganda

Uber has announced the closure of its operations in Nigeria, saying it will discontinue its ride-hailing services in the country effective Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

The company communicated the decision to its drivers in a notice on Wednesday, informing them that they would no longer receive requests for trips through the Uber app from the effective date.

Uber said the decision followed a review of its business in Nigeria, describing the move as difficult after years of providing app-based transportation services in the country.

“ We have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective September 2, 2026. From this date, you will no longer be able to receive rider trip requests through the Uber app. We know this is heavy news, and we want to express our deepest gratitude to you for being a part of our journey in Nigeria,” the company said.

The company expressed appreciation to its drivers for their contributions, acknowledging their role in connecting riders with transportation services and keeping people moving safely and affordably.

Uber said it was proud of the impact its platform had made in Nigeria, describing the service as a technology platform that connected riders with independent drivers.

However, the company did not provide further details about the specific factors that led to its decision to wind down operations in the country.

Uber said its help centre would remain available to drivers until September 24, 2026, to address questions and provide assistance relating to the shutdown.
