UK gov’t increases financial requirements for international students starting 2025

The UK government has announced a substantial hike in the financial requirements for international students, set to take effect on January 2, 2025. This adjustment, the first since 2020, is being introduced to reflect the rising cost of living in the UK.

Under the new regulations, international students must demonstrate their ability to cover living expenses for up to nine months, with different financial thresholds depending on whether they study in London or outside the capital.

Students planning to study in London will now need to show proof of having £1,483 per month, up from £1,334, marking an 11.2% increase. Meanwhile, those studying outside London must show they have £1,136 per month, up from the previous £1,023, representing an 11.1% increase.

The new financial thresholds align with maintenance loans available to domestic students, with the last review of these requirements conducted in 2020. As a result, students intending to study in London for nine months or more will need to show a total of £13,348 in savings.

According to government reports, these changes aim to keep pace with inflation and the increasing cost of living, ensuring that international students can adequately support themselves throughout their studies in the UK.
