The United Kingdom has commended Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms under President Bola Tinubu, describing them as “bold, brave and positive” steps toward sustainable growth and stronger trade relations.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Richard Montgomery, gave the commendation on Monday during a courtesy visit to First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu at the State House, Abuja. He noted that although the reforms are challenging, they are already boosting investor confidence and opening fresh opportunities.

Montgomery also lauded the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI), the First Lady’s flagship programme, for its impact on women’s empowerment through education, health, and humanitarian support. He described the initiative as a credible platform delivering results for women across Nigeria.

The envoy further highlighted growing trade ties between the two countries and expressed interest in Nigeria’s ongoing constitutional review, particularly the proposal to reserve special seats for women in the National Assembly.

Responding, Senator Oluremi Tinubu reaffirmed her commitment to tackling Nigeria’s socio-economic challenges in line with President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. She stressed that the RHI focuses on women in the informal sector, directly supporting families and livelihoods.

The First Lady also called for urgent measures to address the declining number of women in parliament. “We must identify capable representatives and enlighten our women on the importance of active political participation,” she said.

She emphasized the need for stronger collaboration, noting that genuine concern and shared efforts between partners can help accelerate solutions to the country’s challenges.

The British High Commissioner was accompanied on the visit by the Deputy High Commissioner, Gill Lever.
