Uncertainty surrounds Four-Nation tourney as US-Iran war escalates

By Tosin Omojola –

Nigeria’s participation in the Four-Nation tournament billed to hold in Jordan later this month looks uncertain.

The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, are billed to take part in the competition scheduled to hold between March 27 and 31, alongside Jordan, Iran and Costa Rica.

However, the escalation of the face-off between the United States, Israel and Iran could hinder the tourney from holding, following reports of the US and Israel striking Iran, with Iran subsequently striking a US military base in Bahrain.

Already, the Middle East is on edge with the closure of Dubai International Airport, the busiest international airport in the world, and Al Maktoum International Airport, as well as the cancellation of over 280 flights and 250 flights delayed because Iranian ballistic missiles were flying through the airspace.

The latest development has seen Emirates and Etihad airlines grounded, with Qatar Airways suspending flights in the region.

Other major airlines have also been affected, as such airlines have either cancelled or suspended their flights.

An official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) confirmed the fears but refused to rule out the possibility of the tourney eventually going ahead, expressing hope that there will be a solution in the next few days.

“We are watching developments in the region. If the tension continues, it might not be possible to participate in a tournament in the region. Aside from the fear, no airline will be ready to fly to that region, but we hope things don’t escalate further,” stated the NFF chieftain.

Nigeria was expected to kick off the mini-tournament on March 27 with a clash against the Iran national team at the 17,000-capacity Amman International Stadium.
