UNIMEDO lecturers begin indefinite strike over unpaid arrears

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (ASUU-UNIMEDO), has declared an indefinite strike over the non-implementation of the 2025 Federal Government-ASUU agreement and the failure to pay members’ outstanding arrears.

The union said the industrial action commenced on Wednesday, August 27, following the expiration of a 14-day ultimatum issued to the university management and the Ondo State Government.

The decision was contained in a communique issued after the union’s congress on Thursday and signed by its Chairman, Abraham Oladebeye, and Secretary, Adeniran Akinola.

According to the communique, the ultimatum expired without the implementation of the agreement or payment of arrears accruing to members from January 1, 2026. The union said the development left it with no option but to commence industrial action.

Consequently, ASUU-UNIMEDO directed its members to withdraw from all statutory academic responsibilities until its demands are addressed. The directive covers lectures, continuous assessments, examinations, seminars, students’ research supervision, industrial training supervision and fieldwork.

In addition, members are to withdraw from departmental, faculty, committee and Senate meetings, whether conducted physically or virtually. The union said the measures would remain in effect until the agreement is fully implemented and all outstanding arrears are paid, or until further directives from its National Executive Council.

Meanwhile, the union directed its Branch Executive Committee to activate a strike coordinating committee to monitor compliance with the directive. It also expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the state government’s failure to honour the agreement despite the 14-day ultimatum.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Ondo State Government nor the management of the University of Medical Sciences, Ondo, had issued an official response to the strike.
