Students of the Department of Linguistics and Communication Studies of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) have donated educational materials and other aids to improve the lives of students with special needs in Ikoyi, Isokan Local Government of Osun State.
The final-year students, who were on an outreach mission under the auspices of CMS 404: Development Communication, educated their host on essential topics including oral health, personal and environmental hygiene, and menstrual hygiene.
In addition to the enlightenment, they distributed various gift items to the students, including toothbrushes, toothpaste, underwear, sanitary pads, footwear, noodles, soap, mathematical sets, books, and writing materials.

The Development Communicators also donated 50kg of imported rice, vegetable oil, spaghetti, tomato paste, water buckets, waste bins, first aid boxes, chalk, and others to help the students maintain proper hygiene, stay healthy and learn.
In his address, the team leader and course lecturer, Dr. Oluwole Adefemi described the outreach as the practical requirement for CMS 404.
He urged public-spirited individuals to support the less privileged especially the physically challenged and emphasised the importance of using communication apparatus to identify and proffer solutions to social problems.
The school’s Assistant Headmaster, Mr. Adekunle Hamod, appreciated the gesture and appealed to well-to-do individuals and the Government to assist the school in providing a perimeter fence to reduce security risks faced by the students.
He lamented that parents often abandon their wards at the school, viewing them as worthless, and expressed gratitude to the UNIOSUN students for their kindness and support.
