US Consul General resumes in Lagos, pledges to strengthen Nigeria-US partnership
The United States has appointed Brandon Hudspeth as its new Consul General in Lagos, with the career diplomat beginning a three-year tenure as the senior US government representative in the 17 states of southern Nigeria.
The US Consulate General in Lagos announced Hudspeth’s arrival in a statement issued by its Press Office, Public Diplomacy Section, on Friday.
Hudspeth succeeds Rick Swart, who retired from the US Foreign Service in July. He returns to Lagos for his second posting, having previously served as Political-Economic Section Chief at the consulate between 2020 and 2022.
“I am honoured to return to Lagos as the US Consul General,” Hudspeth said, adding that he was looking forward to reconnecting with old friends and building new partnerships across Nigeria.
He said his priorities would include strengthening US-Nigeria trade and investment, promoting innovation, deepening cooperation in technology and the creative industries, and creating opportunities for shared economic prosperity.
Hudspeth brings about two decades of diplomatic experience across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Washington. Before his Lagos appointment, he served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Windhoek, Namibia.
His previous assignments included roles in the Philippines, Mali, Cuba and Afghanistan, as well as positions at the US Department of State in Washington, where he worked in the Operations Center, on the Secretariat Staff supporting the Secretary of State and in the Bureau of African Affairs.
A native of Texas, Hudspeth holds a bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Economics from Morehouse College, a Master of Public Policy from Harvard University’s Kennedy School and a Master of Science in National Resource Strategy from the National Defense University.
