Use your riches to help poor, needy in society, cleric tells wealthy pastors

The Presiding Bishop of Sufficient Grace and Truth International Ministries, Bishop Seun Adeoye, has called on wealthy Nigerians, particularly pastors, to remember the less privileged.

He described their wealth as God’s resources, meant to be shared for the benefit of the needy rather than hoarded for personal indulgence.

In a statement titled “Let Us Be That Good Samaritan,” issued on Monday at his church’s headquarters in Okinni, Osun State, Adeoye criticized some wealthy Nigerian pastors for abandoning the true gospel of Christ in pursuit of worldly recognition and material gains.

Adeoye, who also serves as the International Communication Director of the Worldwide Anglican Church (WAC), expressed dismay over the lifestyles of some rich pastors, stating, “It is sad to realize that out of the 10 richest pastors in the world, eight of them are Nigerians.

“Unfortunately, instead of using their wealth to support the poor, many live in luxury and engage in projects that offer little or no benefit to ordinary people.”

He lamented the ostentatious displays of wealth among prominent clergy, adding, “It is a shame that our big pastors showcase their wealth and even compete with one another. They build walls around themselves and demand adoration to stroke their egos. Let us not forget: our days are numbered.”

Adeoye criticized the focus on acquiring material possessions, saying, “In the midst of hunger and suffering, our rich pastors are busy acquiring the latest cars and flying jets around the world. They are preoccupied with building extravagant cathedrals as if God needs a house built by human hands.”

Referring to the teachings of Jesus, Adeoye reminded pastors of Christ’s instruction to Peter, “Feed my sheep,” not “Acquire worldly wealth.”

He added, “Christ expects us to feed the hungry, help widows, lift the weak, clothe the naked, and more. We are to draw people to God’s Kingdom through our deeds, not by flaunting wealth. Repent, sirs!”

As the spokesman of the World Bishops Council (WBC), Adeoye emphasized the urgency of addressing poverty in Nigeria and called on wealthy and influential individuals to share their resources with the needy.

He also encouraged those already assisting the poor to increase their efforts, highlighting the worsening hardships caused by the current economic challenges.
