A Professor in the Department of Science Education, University of Ilorin, Ganiyu Bello, has called on government agencies, school ICT centres and educational technology providers to supply e-learning platforms to enhance the relevance of biology education.

Bello made the call on Thursday while delivering the university’s 301st inaugural lecture titled, “Advancing Biology Education Through Constructivist Pedagogy: A Road to Sustainable National Development.”

The professor described science education as a discipline concerned with the teaching and learning of science, noting that it remains a voyage of discovery for both educators and students.

According to him, science education promotes scientific literacy and lifelong learning among citizens, while also producing professionals needed for science-based careers and sustainable national development.

Bello explained that the application of innovative constructivist instructional strategies, such as concept mapping, analogy, game-based learning, metaphors, gallery walks and mind maps, has improved students’ understanding of complex biology concepts.

He noted that technology has made the study of biology more interactive, accessible and relevant, adding that expanding digital literacy would prepare future citizens to participate effectively in a knowledge-based economy.

The don further stated that constructivist teaching strategies not only improve comprehension but also boost students’ engagement and interest in biology and science education generally. He added that fostering critical thinking, creativity and problem-solving skills would help learners contribute to scientific innovation, environmental sustainability and health awareness.

Bello therefore urged teacher training institutions, ministries of education and professional associations to organise continuous professional development programmes, seminars and certification courses for teachers. He said such initiatives would strengthen teachers’ mastery of biology content and pedagogy, ultimately producing graduates capable of driving innovation in science, technology and environmental sustainability.
