Vice President Kashim Shettima has highlighted the potential of Nigeria’s carnival industry to foster national unity, strengthen cultural heritage, and create significant opportunities for youth empowerment.

He announced that the Nigerian government is positioning the carnival sector to benefit from the global carnival market, which is estimated to be worth $5 billion. This strategy aims to drive economic growth while celebrating Nigeria’s cultural diversity.

During a meeting with a delegation from the Abuja International Carnival at the Presidential Villa on Wednesday, VP Shettima emphasized the value of the $5 billion global carnival market as a resource for Nigeria’s economic agenda.

“The global carnival market is valued at $5 billion, a figure that highlights its potential to contribute meaningfully to our economic growth. Beyond showcasing our cultural heritage, it can also serve as a powerful tool for national unity and economic development,” VP Shettima stated.

He also reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration’s commitment to supporting youth-led initiatives within the creative industry, acknowledging their role in promoting employment and social cohesion.

Shettima noted the international success of major carnivals, such as Rio de Janeiro’s, which attracts nearly 200 million visitors annually, and the Calabar Carnival, deeply embedded in the Efik/Ibibio cultural identity.

“The Abuja Carnival once stood as an even larger celebration. I urge you to expedite all efforts to bring this event back to prominence,” he encouraged the Abuja International Carnival team.

VP Shettima further spotlighted the government’s Investment in Digital and Creative Enterprises (iDICE) project, a $618 million initiative supporting digital and creative industries, including the carnival sector.

Earlier, Kehinde Adegbite, CEO of the Abuja International Carnival, expressed gratitude for the Vice President’s support. He outlined plans to collaborate with the Ministry of Art, Culture, and the Creative Economy to rejuvenate the carnival.

“We recently met with Minister Hannatu Musawa, who is highly supportive and agreed to partner with us. The carnival is a platform for unity, youth empowerment, and talent discovery,” he shared.
