The maiden edition of the West African Football Union (WAFU) A & B U-20 Boys Cup of Nations, originally scheduled to hold in Ghana between June 15 and 30, 2025, will no longer take place as planned following the official postponement of the tournament.
The postponement was conveyed by the host, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), via a letter addressed to participating nations and made available to the press.
The letter stated: “We regret to announce that the WAFU A & B U-20 Boys Cup of Nations, scheduled to take place in Prampram from June 15–30, 2025, has been postponed. A new date for the tournament will be announced in due course.”
The GFA also urged all participating teams, officials, and stakeholders to remain patient and monitor official communication platforms for updates regarding the revised schedule.
“The tournament’s rescheduling aims to ensure the best possible conditions for a successful event,” the letter added. “We are committed to delivering an exciting competition for all participants,” the GFA further stated.
Sixteen national teams from WAFU Zones A and B, including Nigeria, were scheduled to compete in the tournament.
The Flying Eagles have been in a training camp in Abuja for the past week as part of their preparations, with coach Aliyu Zubairu describing the WAFU tournament as a perfect stage for his team to intensify their buildup to the FIFA U-20 World Cup taking place in Chile later in the year.
Meanwhile, participating countries look forward to the announcement of a new schedule for the tournament, with hopes that the delay will allow for improved planning and better overall conditions for the players and officials. The GFA has emphasized that they are working diligently to finalize the new dates and ensure a smooth tournament experience when it eventually takes place.
