WAPA promotes economic independence among vulnerable Lagos residents

The Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing poverty and promoting economic independence among vulnerable residents during the 2026 International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.
The event, held on Tuesday at the Skills Acquisition Centre, Isheri-Olowora, Lagos, was themed “Ending Poverty: Building Inclusive, Resilient and Sustainable Communities”.
Speaking at the event, the Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Bolaji Cecilia Dada, said poverty went beyond a lack of money to include limited access to basic needs, economic opportunities and essential services.
Dada said the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was addressing these challenges through tuition-free skills acquisition centres across the five IBILE divisions and livelihood support programmes for widows, survivors of sexual and gender-based violence, young school leavers and other vulnerable groups.
She urged beneficiaries to use the grants provided judiciously to strengthen their businesses, expand operations and increase their income. She also called on community leaders, private organisations and civil society groups to support vulnerable residents and widen access to economic opportunities.
The programme featured health sensitisation by representatives of the Lagos State Health Management Agency, who encouraged beneficiaries to undergo regular medical check-ups, practise preventive healthcare and register for the Ilera Eko health insurance scheme to reduce medical expenses.
Facilitator Oluwafunmilayo Ayodele spoke on business growth, financial management and strategies for expanding businesses without incurring debt, while Rufai Olatundun educated participants on nutrition, personal hygiene and healthy living.
In her vote of thanks, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Rianat Ajibike Onigbanjo, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu, Dada, the ministry’s directors, particularly the Director of the Poverty Alleviation Department, Toyin Salami, facilitators, beneficiaries and other stakeholders for their contributions.
