WCQ: Nine Super Eagles risk suspension ahead of South Africa clash

Nine Super Eagles players are at risk of suspension as Nigeria prepares for crucial back-to-back fixtures in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

The affected players, including key starters and squad regulars, have each accumulated a yellow card and face a one-match suspension if booked again. Nigeria will host Rwanda in Uyo in September before travelling to Johannesburg to face group leaders South Africa.

While the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is still hopeful that FIFA will deduct points from South Africa for allegedly fielding an ineligible player against Lesotho, the Super Eagles currently trail the Bafana Bafana by six points.

Among the cautioned players are defenders Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey. Ajayi was booked in the opening match against Lesotho, while Bassey saw yellow in the away fixture against Zimbabwe.

Sadiq Umar and Jamilu Collins, who both came on as substitutes against Zimbabwe, also received cautions. Right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel was booked during the reverse fixture against South Africa.

Ismaila Sodiq joined the list after being cautioned in the 2-1 defeat to Benin Republic. Midfielder Wilfred Ndidi, playmaker Alex Iwobi, and striker Tolu Arokodare were all shown yellow cards in Nigeria’s 2-0 win away to Rwanda.

With the stakes high, the Super Eagles’ technical crew must ensure discipline is maintained in the Rwanda tie to avoid losing key players for the potentially decisive clash in Johannesburg.
