Why Okoye, Moffi, Arokodare, others could not make Super Eagles’ AFCON squad

Facts have emerged on why Super Eagles head coach Eric Sekou Chelle excluded some players, including goalkeeper Maduka Okoye and forward Terem Moffi, from Nigeria’s final 28-man squad for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
According to OwnGoalNigeria.com, Okoye’s omission followed internal deliberations over his stance on playing time. The Udinese goalkeeper was expected to compete with Stanley Nwabali for the starting role but did not make the final list released by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
A member of Chelle’s backroom staff disclosed that Okoye insisted on being guaranteed the first-choice position before committing to the tournament. The coaching crew reportedly rejected the demand, with Chelle maintaining that all players must earn their places through competition.
Udinese also informed the NFF that they were unwilling to release Okoye without assurances of regular playing time, citing concerns over losing the goalkeeper for up to three weeks. With no guarantees given, Chelle opted for Francis Uzoho while retaining confidence in a medically fit Nwabali.
Terem Moffi was left out due to concerns about his mental readiness. Sources said the striker has been affected by recent incidents involving supporters of his French club, including an attack at the training ground, and may need time to stabilise.
Tolu Arokodare’s exclusion was attributed to limited playing time and performances that failed to convince the coaching staff. Chelle was reportedly unimpressed by his displays against Rwanda in Uyo and during the Unity Cup in England.
Instead, Chelle selected Paul Onuachu, pointing to the striker’s experience and impressive form with Trabzonspor in Turkey, where he is enjoying a prolific run and ranks among the league’s top scorers.
Uche Chrisantus was also omitted after failing to impress in Nigeria’s World Cup qualifier against South Africa, with difficulties settling at Premier League side Crystal Palace further influencing Chelle’s final decision.
