Wike accuses Atiku of broken promises, defends support for Tinubu

Nyesom Wike, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, has strongly criticized Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), accusing him of failing to honor agreements.

Speaking in a media interview on Friday in Abuja, Wike reaffirmed that his decision to back President Bola Tinubu in the 2023 general elections was the right one, citing the PDP’s lack of readiness for leadership.

Wike pointed out that Atiku’s history of broken promises made it impossible for him to support the PDP in the 2023 election. He specifically referred to an unfulfilled agreement from 2019, when Atiku, alongside former Senate President Bukola Saraki and former PDP National Chairman Uche Secondus, had promised him significant influence over key ministerial appointments.

According to Wike, Atiku’s failure to keep this commitment demonstrated his unreliability.

“We were promised key positions, including the Attorney-General and the Minister of Petroleum. But when the legal team was formed, the person slated for Attorney-General was unaware. That’s just one example of how Atiku doesn’t follow through on his promises,” Wike said.

He also criticized internal power struggles within the PDP, stating that the party’s inability to unite would hinder its chances of success.

Wike concluded by stating that supporting Atiku was never a viable option for him, reaffirming his belief that supporting Tinubu was the right decision.
