Wike announces plans to overhaul FCT transport sector

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has announced that comprehensive reforms are underway to enhance safety and comfort in the FCT transportation sector.

According to a statement by his media aide, Lere Olayinka, on Friday, Wike disclosed this after inspecting the completed Kugbo and Mabushi Bus and Taxi Terminals in Abuja. The terminals are scheduled for inauguration as part of activities marking President Bola Tinubu’s second year in office.

The minister also inspected the completed access road to Giri District, which is similarly ready for commissioning.

Wike stated that significant reforms are being planned, with a dedicated committee currently finalizing the framework ahead of the formal opening of the new terminals. “Obviously, a lot of things will happen in the transport sector in the FCT. There will be a lot of reforms,” he said.

He noted that as part of enhanced security measures, the administration would introduce regulations to identify taxi operators and establish designated vehicle colors. “We must know those involved in the taxi business and what colour to use, so that if anything happens, we will be able to identify them,” Wike explained.

The minister added that the FCT Administration is working to eliminate numerous unauthorized roadside motor parks to improve traffic flow and public safety.

Speaking on the quality of the inspected projects, Wike expressed satisfaction but mentioned that he had directed some corrections in specific areas. He commended the contractor’s performance and reiterated the administration’s commitment to supporting local contractors in delivering quality infrastructure.

The Kugbo, Mabushi, and Central Area Bus and Taxi Terminals are part of broader efforts to modernize the FCT’s transportation system. While the Kugbo and Mabushi terminals are ready for inauguration, the Central Area terminal is still under construction. Wike also announced that two additional terminals would be built in Bwari and Gwagwalada.
