Minister urges Nigerian women to embrace political, economic leadership

The Minister of Women Affairs, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has urged Nigerian women to take greater ownership of the country’s political and economic future through inclusive governance and national development. She made the call on Thursday during a one-day town hall meeting and citizen engagement held in Abuja.
Addressing participants, the minister stressed the need for women to play a more strategic role in politics and decision-making, noting that the gathering was aimed at fostering unity and a shared vision for the advancement of Nigerian women. “The reason why we are here is because we want what is best for ourselves, for the Nigerian women, for our community, for our families,” she said.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim emphasized the importance of the proposed special reserve seats bill in the National Assembly, describing it as a crucial step toward fair representation of women in governance. She said women must be deliberate, united, and forward-thinking in their quest for empowerment.

“We are the voting strength of this country; we and our children. That gives us the permission to negotiate for anything because we will stick to our words. We have to be masters in negotiating,” the minister added, while also calling for stronger internal support systems and mentorship among women.
Hauwa Ibrahim, wife of the Ona of Abaji and president of the FCT Traditional Rulers Wives Association, praised the inclusive nature of the event and said it reflected the minister’s willingness to work with diverse stakeholders. She added that traditional institutions and women leaders across Nigeria resonate with the minister’s message of unity and progress.
Adedayo Benjamins-Laniyi, mandate secretary of the FCT Women Affairs Secretariat, expressed optimism about the progress of women under the current administration. She commended the minister’s leadership, noting that her vision has been both unifying and motivating for women across the Federal Capital Territory.
Ruth Agbo, president of the Association of Women in Trade and Agriculture, hailed the resilience of Nigerian women and their growing role in trade and agriculture. She, however, called for greater support, including equipment and funding, to help women reach their full potential in driving economic productivity.
In her remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr Maryam Keshinro, highlighted the enthusiasm and determination of Nigerian women to shape their futures. She assured that the ideas shared during the engagement would be translated into actionable steps to enhance women’s roles in national development.
