Wike reveals his liver shut down after food poisoning

Former Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike, shocked attendees at a special Thanksgiving service on Sunday as he disclosed some life-threatening situations he encountered during his eight-year tenure.
Speaking at the St. Peters Deanery, Rumuepirikom, Obio-Akpor, Wike revealed that he was poisoned at the secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in December 2018. The poison affected his liver and kidneys, almost taking his life if not for divine intervention.
During the service, attended by numerous dignitaries, including Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and several senators and former governors, Wike narrated the harrowing experiences he faced.
Recalling the incident of poisoning, Wike stated: “In December 2018, it was a day my former Chief of Staff was going to have Thanksgiving. I was to attend that Thanksgiving. From that Sunday, I never came down from my room. It was bad. But those who attended the January 1st state banquet of 2019 will know that I never spoke that day. I just sat down there and told the Deputy Governor to speak on my behalf. I thought it was over.”
He further revealed that he was flown to a hospital in Beirut, Lebanon, where doctors informed him that his liver and kidney were no longer functioning.
However, after undergoing treatment, his organs miraculously began working again, leading to his eventual discharge from the hospital.
Wike expressed his suspicion that the poisoning occurred at the PDP secretariat.
The former governor also shared other near-death experiences, including his wife’s cancer diagnosis during his presidential primary campaign and a plane engine explosion during a trip to Abuja.
Despite these challenges, Wike expressed gratitude for God’s intervention and the support of his wife.
Throughout his speech, Wike underscored the importance of a peaceful transition in Rivers State and his commitment to the success of the party.
He highlighted his efforts in acquiring the forms for all elections within the party, ensuring a united front and preventing post-election crises.
Wike concluded by thanking the Senate President, who defied criticisms to support his governorship ambition in 2015.
Wike reciprocated the support by backing Akpabio for the Senate Presidency, citing their long-standing relationship.
