Wike warns PDP against readmitting Obi, says party risks collapse

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has cautioned that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) could be heading for destruction if it considers bringing back former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, into its fold.
Speaking during a media chat on Monday, Wike accused the PDP of failing to learn from the missteps that cost it dearly in the 2023 general elections. He recalled warning against allowing both the presidential candidate and the national chairman to come from the North, insisting that the decision was unfair and politically damaging.
“From day one, I told my colleagues, PDP, you are shooting yourself. You cannot have the presidential candidate and the national chairman from the same region. It was bound to fail, and it did,” Wike said.
The former Rivers State governor argued that the party’s disregard for equity and balance contributed to its electoral loss. He maintained that power must return to the South if the PDP hopes to rebuild credibility and restore stability.
On Obi’s possible return to the PDP, Wike dismissed the idea as dangerous and hypocritical.
“Bringing Obi back will kill the party. This is someone who described PDP as rotten, and now the same party is good enough for him? Ambition can drive people anywhere, but that will destroy our foundation,” he declared.
Wike stressed that only equity, justice, and adherence to zoning principles can revive the PDP’s relevance ahead of future elections.
