Wike’s aide dismisses Gov Diri’s security alert as ‘shamefully baseless’

The Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Lere Olayinka, has dismissed the recent security concerns raised by Bayelsa State Governor, Douye Diri, regarding a planned mega rally in support of Nyesom Wike.

In a statement released on Friday, Olayinka described Governor Diri’s claims as a “shamefully baseless” alarm, accusing him of using Wike as a distraction from his own governance failures.

Governor Diri had alleged that a rally and the inauguration of a group loyal to Wike were being planned in Bayelsa, suggesting potential security risks. However, Olayinka countered that if the FCT Minister intended to attend any political rally, he would personally notify security agencies, emphasizing that Wike is not afraid of public engagements.

“It is unfortunate that a governor with all the security apparatus at his disposal would go on national television based on mere suspicion of people planning a rally, which is their right to hold,” Olayinka stated.

He questioned whether Governor Diri feared Wike to the extent of attempting to prevent people from expressing support for him. “Nigerians are free to express their support for anyone, anywhere, and anytime. Is this how much the governor is afraid of Wike?” he asked.

Olayinka also criticized the Bayelsa State government for reportedly convening a Security Council and an Elders Council meeting over suspicions of a pro-Wike rally. “Is this how childish governance in Bayelsa State has become?” he queried. “Must he use Wike as a cover-up for his failure in governance and politics?”

Further attacking Diri’s credibility, Olayinka recalled how the governor had previously sought Wike’s support during his reelection campaign. “When he was seeking reelection, Diri was brought to Wike like a thief in the night, begging for support. Wike even had to remind him, ‘You’re a governor, don’t do that,’” he alleged.

Olayinka concluded that it was shameful for Diri to now turn against Wike after benefiting from his goodwill. “Some people clearly have no conscience, and it is unfortunate,” he remarked.
