Women’s U-17 World Cup: Flamingos battle Italy for quarter-final ticket

By Tosin Omojola –
Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, will face their Italian counterparts in one of the second-round fixtures of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup taking place in Morocco.
The Flamingos advanced to this stage after finishing as one of the best third-placed teams, having ended third in their group with three points, behind Canada and France.
Based on both teams’ performances so far, the Italians are considered favourites to progress at the expense of the Nigerians. However, despite showing flashes of promise during their group matches, the Flamingos will need to raise their game to upset the Italians.
Italy finished top of Group A ahead of Brazil, Morocco, and Costa Rica, and head into the knockout stage full of confidence.
Coach Bankole Olowookere’s side recovered from a shaky start to crush Samoa 4–0 in their final group match, securing qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.
While Italy have been impressive, knockout football often produces surprises, and both teams will be determined to take control, knowing that a single mistake could end their World Cup dream.
Players to Watch
Giulia Galli (Italy):
With five goals already, Galli is the tournament’s leading scorer and a key player for the Italians. “Having eyes on you from all over the world makes you feel even more charged up,” she told FIFA after her brace against Costa Rica.
Queen Joseph (Nigeria):
Nigeria’s top scorer, Joseph, combines technical brilliance with speed and composure. Her ability to pierce defensive lines makes her a major threat. The Fosla Academy star will look to inspire the Flamingos against a compact Italian side.
