The Chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) and Second Vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), Honourable Gbenga Elegbeleye, has assured former Sunshine Stars FC captain, Abe Sunday, that he will not be left jobless following his retirement from football.

Elegbeleye, a former Director General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), made this promise during an iconic, carnival-like retirement celebration for the Akure-born footballer in Akure, Ondo State’s capital.

He praised Abe as a leader both on and off the field, saying, “I have known Abe Sunday since his youth. I’ve supported him both on and off the pitch, even adjusting my schedule at times to be there for him. He is truly deserving of this celebration.”

The former Chairman of the House Committee on Sports told the audience how he supported Abe’s rise from humble beginnings to the national team, guiding and mentoring him through the years.

“Abe is like a son to me, and this event isn’t just about him—it’s about celebrating both of us. You may be celebrating him today, but in a way, I am also a celebrant,” Elegbeleye added.

Otolorin Elegbeleye described Abe as a young man of great character, which contributed to his success on and off the field. “Many players are talented, but today we’re celebrating a player with exceptional character. Abe is someone to be emulated.”

Elegbeleye assured Abe that his retirement would lead to new opportunities, saying, “I can assure you that your retirement is a stepping stone to greater things. You won’t be left jobless.”

Chairman of the Ondo State Football Association, Otunba Dele Ajayi, lauded Abe as a great ambassador of Akure Kingdom and encouraged younger players to follow in his footsteps. “Abe started well and ended well. His commitment to excellence is something we’re all proud of.”

Otunba Ajayi, represented by his Chief of Staff, Mr. Sunday Aladenika, joined other dignitaries, including Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen, in delivering goodwill messages. Eguavoen described Abe as a fighter whose determination on the pitch is worthy of admiration.

Other notable figures at the event included former Super Eagles player Mutiu Adepoju, Ganiyu Oseni, former U-17 and U-20 player-turned-FIFA agent Alfa Yakubu, Ambassador Henry Abiodun, Vincent Temitope, and Jide Jimoh. They all praised Abe as a rare talent whose impact is immeasurable.

Chairperson of the Ondo State Football Coaches Association, Mrs. Tayo Onilude, encouraged aspiring footballers in Ondo State and beyond to follow Abe’s example. “He gave his best, and we’re here to celebrate him. Another phase of life begins today, and he deserves to be recognized statewide and nationally.”

Traditional rulers, family, friends, artisans, referees, coaches, football teams, and journalists all attended the event to honor Abe Sunday.
